Initiatives such as Firebird are truly worth admiring. That a community of users can go ahead and create such a complete database system is something that should make the free software movement very proud.

Firebird was the initiative of a group of programmers who decided to take the InterBase 6´s released code and improve it to create an open source relational database in which any other programmer could join in and contribute with their knowledge, thus improving the product.

It has many features in common with SQL, which comes as no surprise as it is based mainly on this standard. Plus, Firebird also stands out because of its low resource consumption, its safety, and because it is multiplatform.

It is, without a doubt, a great choice when setting up database on a Linux operating system.
